Battle for Beijing ePrix win ends in violent airborne crash

The first ever Formula E ePrix ended in one of the most spectacular finishes you will ever see. Lucas di Grassi stole the victory, but you won't believe how he ended up on the top step of the podium.

Nicolas Prost dominated the race but was being harassed by Nick Heidfeld throughout the final portion of the event. Heidfeld went for it as they raced towards the final corner and the unthinkable happened. Contact was made and an absolutely terrifying accident ensued.

Both crashed but Heidfeld went flying through the air after impacting the barrier. He crawled from the upside down car uninjured and immediately ran towards Prost, furious with what took place. Prost blamed Heidfeld for the contact, telling reporters "I think with the speed he was at there was no chance he could make the corner ... I just brake in the middle thinking, you know, he’s not going to try anything stupid, but he tried a suicide jump. Then I moved to the right but he already hit my wheel and it was too late.”

The two are actually teammates at Rebellion over in the WEC and have been co-drivers at Le Mans.

Franck Montagny finished second and Daniel Abt was originally scored third, but was later dropped to tenth because he failed to serve a drive-through penalty. Sam Bird has moved up to the final spot on the podium. The rest of the top finishers were Charles Pic, Karun Chandhok, Jerome D'Ambrosio Oriol Servia, Nelson Piquet Jr., Stephane Sarrazin, and the aforementioned Daniel Abt.
