The impending move comes after a disappointing first season in the FIA Formula E Championship for the Indian-owned team, which partnered with Carlin to run its quartet of Spark-Renaults in the inaugural season.

It finished eighth in the teams' championship, and its best-placed driver was Bruno Senna in 10th.

Mahindra team principal Dilbagh Gill would not comment directly on a potential change of team, but did suggest that changes will be made. Carlin also refused to speak on the subject.

“From a team perspective we have underperformed at all levels this season, which is disappointing,” Gill told Motorsport.com at the London season finale. “We will be making changes for season two, focused primarily on performance.

“I think we can re-group now, make some decisions and look ahead to building on this experience in a positive way.”

Motorsport.com understands that Mahindra is evaluating a plan to work with a new team to be run from Donington Park, from July onwards.

Sources have indicated that Campos Racing – who already run the NEXTEV TCR operation – could be among the favourites to partner with Mahindra, and in so doing increase its presence in the championship.

Mahindra has already run its season-two test car for the first time at Dunsfold Park recently, and is set for further tests later this month and throughout August.
