Sao Paulo, Santiago set to join season four Formula E calendar

A working draft for the season four Formula E calendar indicates plans for new races in Sao Paulo, Santiago and Rome, Motorsport.com can reveal.

Possible events in Zurich or Munich may also materialise for the fourth season of the all-electric championship.

The draft, which was acquired by Motorsport.com in Paris last weekend, shows a planned start date of 2/3 December for the second Hong Kong ePrix. The event is planned to be a double-header.

Unlike the current season, Formula E is preparing to have more races in a shorter space of time, with most rounds taking place within three or four weeks of each other and with a later start to the season.

This is designed to avoid the large gaps of the 2016/17 season, in which the first three races were separated by three months.

Marrakesh is absent from the draft, although it is understood that the Moroccan city is still in the frame to host a second ePrix at some stage of season four.

A mooted Latin America triple-header fills the first weeks of 2018, with a first-ever international motorsport event on the streets of the Chilean capital, Santiago, pencilled in on 13 January.

After a third running of the Mexico City ePrix in February, the series will return to South America for a race in Sao Paulo, which is expected to use aspects of the former IndyCar venue that hosted races between 2010 and 2013.

A provisional date for the first ever Formula E race in Brazil is 17 March, and will be followed by the inaugural ever Rome ePrix with a provisional date of 7 April.

The third Paris ePrix is slated for three weeks later on 28 April, while a May race in either Berlin or Munich is planned, probably for May 19.

An event in Moscow or Zurich is still being worked on for the end of June before the season is set to end, as per the current calendar, with a North American leg in New York and Montreal on 7/8 July and 28/29 July respectively. Both will again be double-header races.

There will be no race in London until season five at the earliest.

The series is also continuing to explore the possibility of a race in Shanghai after manufacturers voiced a strong desire to have a second Chinese race in addition to the Hong Kong opener.

The final calendar is set to be presented to the FIA World Motorsport Council next month and will be issued publicly on 19 June.
