All Carlin drivers struggled with car setup issues on Friday, putting them immediately on the backfoot. None of them qualified inside the top 10, with Daruvala resigned to 15th on the grid for Race 1.

The British outfit made several changes overnight which delivered a performance boost, but with overtaking overtaking notoriously difficult around the Hungaroring, the Force India junior could only gain two places to end 13th.

A better showing in Saturday qualifying placed Daruvala sixth on the grid for Race 2 - and he managed to hold off Mick Schumacher, son of F1 legend Michael, to retain that position at the chequered flag.

Stalled start costs potential podium

Race 3 represented Daruvala’s best chance of a race win, having qualified fourth on the grid. But the Mumbai-born driver unfortunately stalled at the start of the race, dropping down to the back of the pack.

Despite the setback, he initiated a spectacular charge, making some bold moves to finish just outside the points in 11th.

Although he couldn’t find his way back inside the top 10, his pace towards the end drew plenty of plaudits - leaving everything to think what might have been if he had got away cleanly from the grid.
