Hungaroring F3: Gunther completes pole hat-trick

Prema Powerteam's Maximilian Gunther added two more poles to his tally in second European F3 qualifying at the Hungaroring.

While no driver surpassed the 1m34s mark in the first qualifying, Gunther managed to do so in the closing stages of the second session - albeit that did not put an end to the fight for pole.

Shortly after the German passed the mark, teammate Ralf Aron and Motopark's Sergio Sette Camara did likewise, overtaking Gunther.

However, having inherited Race 1 pole after George Russell was penalised for a track limits infringement, Gunther went outright quickest this time around, with a lap of 1m33.614s.

He then shaved off a tenth with his next lap, but saw it cancelled for the very same reason - track limits.

However, Gunther's original benchmark would not be surpassed by anyone else in what little remaining time there was, with top rookie Aron settling for second and Sette Camara sharing row two with Guan Yu Zhou, who finished almost seventh tenths down on Gunther.

Russell, in fifth, was the last driver to lap within a second of the German's best time.

Gunther and Aron's Prema teammates Nick Cassidy and Lance Stroll had a relatively muted session in sixth and ninth, split by Alessio Lorandi and Ben Barnicoat, while the top 10 was rounded out by Red Bull junior Niko Kari.

On the grid for Race 3, based on second-best times, Gunther will be joined on front row by Sette Camara.
