Hungaroring F3: Ilott blitzes the field in Race 2

Prema Powerteam's Callum Ilott dominated the second race of the European F3 weekend at the Hungaroring, beating nearest rival Joel Eriksson by 8.6s.

The Briton converted pole into his third victory this campaign – one that was in little doubt right after the opening laps.

Ilott kept the lead from Eriksson off the line but had to defend from the Swede at Turn 1 and was very nearly passed round the outside of the second corner.

But while Eriksson shadowed Ilott throughout the first lap, that would prove a false dawn as far as a genuine victory battle was concerned.

Ilott was a second ahead after a couple of tours and went on to steadily increase his advantage in the first half of the race.

He then noticeably upped his pace around halfway point, bringing a car home for a crushing victory.

In what was a rather processional race, with no overtakes in the top 10 after the start, Eriksson was a second clear of third-placed Guan Yu Zhou, the Chinese Ferrari protege bagging his first podium with Prema.

Jake Hughes was fourth for Hitech, ahead of Motopark newcomer David Beckmann – who recorded by far the best result of his season, having scored no points in his first four rounds with Van Amersfoort Racing.

The VAR contingent was led by Joey Mawson, who followed Saturday winner Maximilian Gunther home in seventh – keeping the lead Carlin of Jehan Daruvala at bay.

Mick Schumacher made it four Prema cars in the top 10, with 10th-placed Ferdinand Habsburg successfully defending the final points-paying position from Nikita Mazepin.

McLaren junior Lando Norris, who had been blighted by poor starts throughout his rookie F3 campaign so far, struggled off the line again, very nearly stalling and going from third to 16th.

He made up one spot right away but then spent most of the race behind VAR's Harrison Newey, eventually getting past to finish 14th.

Despite only taking sixth, Gunther continues to lead the championship, although he is now down to a 12-point advantage over Eriksson, who will start Race 3 from pole.
