Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) also won the second race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. The Italian, born in the Swiss city of Zurich, won at the 4.574 kilometres long Grand Prix track from Josh Hill (Fortec Motorsports), the son of ex-Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill. Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational), whose father Stig won the 1984 world rally championship title, was classified third. After eight races, Marciello has now a margin of 81.5 points in the lead of the drivers’ standings.

In bright sunshine, Raffaele Marciello converted his pole position into the lead at the start while Tom Blomqvist followed in second place. On the opening lap, Antonio Giovinazzi (Double R Racing) missed his braking point and collided with Jann Mardenborough (Carlin). Richard Goddard (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and Lucas Wolf (URD Rennsport) also became involved in the accident, which led to a safety car intervention. As a result of the collision, Giovinazzi and Mardenborough retired.

Racing resumed at the start of lap four and Raffaele Marciello retained his fourth place from Tom Blomqvist. Josh Hill overtook Félix Serrallés and was fourth behind Lucas Auer (Prema Powerteam). On the tenth lap, Hill benefited from a driving error by Blomqvist and in the Motodrom, he overtook Auer and Blomqvist in one move to climb up to second place. The Brit held on to his position until the finish and celebrated his maiden podium result in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Behind Formula 3 novice Hill, Blomqvist and Auer finished third and fourth respectively.

Félix Serrallés (Fortec Motorsport) took the chequered flag in fifth place. Dennis van de Laar (Van Amersfoort Racing) finished sixth to score his best result in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship to date. Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam), Sven Müller (ma-con), Jordan King (Carlin) and Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) rounded out the top ten.

Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) “I had slight problems with the tyres, therefore, it wasn’t as easy as this morning. I think it was because the track provided relatively much grip. But nevertheless, I have managed to win the race and I am happy about that.”

Josh Hill (Fortec Motorsports) “I was behind Tom and Lucas as Tom made a slight mistake. After that, the two battled with each other and thus gave me the chance to overtake them. To be honest, I didn’t expect to be on the podium already this early in the season. Second place is a great result.”

Tom Blomqvist (Eurointernational) “Keeping Lucas at bay wasn’t easy. Coming out of the Mercedes Arena, I made a slight mistake and Lucas was right behind me. In the Motodrom, Josh then overtook both of us. After that, I tried to defend at least my third place, which wasn’t easy. But eventually, I managed to finish ahead of Lucas.”
