Norris was in a three-way fight with Prema duo Callum Ilott and Maximilian Gunther in the second half of the session, with the trio trading the lead several times.

The Carlin driver was the last to improve, his 1m50.094s just six thousandths of a second better than Ilott's time.

Gunther had to settle for third despite being less than a tenth adrift.

BMW protege Joel Eriksson was fourth, followed by another Carlin rookie Jehan Daruvala.

Ferrari junior Guan Yu Zhou was sixth ahead of Nikita Mazepin, who was the fastest Hitech driver in the session.

Stand-in Jake Dennis, who is only confirmed for the first three rounds of the season, took eighth, but was still less than four tenths slower than his teammate.

Two more rookies in Joey Mawson, who beat his three more experienced teammates at Van Amersfoort Racing by four tenths, and Honda's Tadasuke Makino completed the top 10.

Makino beat Hitech teammate Jake Hughes by 0.007s, who in turn was just ahead of Mick Schumacher, the German kicking off his F3 career in 12th.
