Volkswagen driver Mika Maki barely misses podium

Wolfsburg (16 May 2009) Volkswagen driver Mika Maki made a good start to the new Formula 3 Euro Series season at Hockenheim with a fourth-place finish. The Finn started from position three on the grid, lost two places in the turbulent starting phase and made up ground again in the 20-lap race. "Five points are pretty good for starters, even though I could have done better -- I wouldn't have minded the race being longer," said the 21-year-old who set top lap times up to the finish, consistently moving forwards to trail the front runners. Jean Karl Vernay, who -- like Maki -- drives for the Signature team, came in sixth place and scored two points. "I was running on used tyres and, considering that, my speed was pretty good. That gives rise to hopes for the second race," commented the 21-year-old from France who will start from position three of the grid on Sunday -- the starting order is produced by the result of the first race, with the top eight finishers starting in reverse order. Tiago Geronimi (BR/Signature) and Robert Wickens (CDN/Kolles & Heinz Union) "powered by Volkswagen" occupied places ten and eleven, Carlo van Dam (NL/K&HU) and Brendon Hartley (NZL/Carlin) were classified in 18th and 19th place, respectively.

ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup
Pole position for Elia Erhart - Vivien Volk shines at home round

Wolfsburg (16 May 2009) Successful start for Elia Erhart: The driver from Nuremberg clinched the pole position for the season opener of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at Hockenheim. In the final seconds of qualifying, the 21-year-old relegated Maciek Steinhof from Poland and the Swede Simon Reinberth to positions two and three. "Finally, everything fit, although I usually had difficulties at Hockenheim," said Erhart, who is starting to his third Polo Cup season. "I've already clinched second and third places - now it's time for a win. But it's clear that the Polo Cup field is so competitive that you can never be sure. A huge surprise was caused by Vivien Volk: The quick lady from Speyer in sixth place clinched her best qualifying result so far, outperforming a large number of her male rivals. "I'm happy that my home round is going so well - and I hope this will continue in the race," said the 19-year-old. Rookie Maximilian Schneider, who experienced his first ever weekend as a racer, was extremely happy as well... "Coming seventh in qualifying and being the best rookie is a great feeling, but you don't get a trophy for that. I've got to take this result to the finish line," said the 21-year-old. Guest entrant Freddie Hunt, the son of former Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt, finished 17th in the field of 28 contenders.
