For Thompson, it was the second victory in succession in Montréal, having also won Saturday’s shortened race.
Driving a Spectrum, Konrad Czaczyk was on pole position for this second race. Thompson, was second in the sister Spectrum, ahead of Stefan Rzadzinski (Mygale) and Olivier Bédard (Mygale).
Moments after the standing start, it was three abreast going into the Senna corner, with Thompson taking the lead.
At the beginning of the second lap, Rzadzinski passed Czaczyk for second place, and Roman de Angelis moved up to the fourth spot ahead of Bédard. The action was pretty intense - but clean - between the front-running eight cars.
One lap later, Czaczyk passed Rzadzinski at the hairpin corner. At the beginning of Lap 4, the order was Thompson, Czaczyk, Rzadzinski, Roman de Angelis, Dominic Legrand, and Bédard.
De Angelis was flying and made it to third corners later and before the end of Lap 4, he was up in second place.
The race went under a full course yellow and the Safety car took the track on Lap 5 after Jacob Asthern smacked the wall in his No. 95 Spectrum. Two loose wheels rolled onto the track, but luckily no one hit them. His car was resting against the concrete wall, and a tow truck was needed.
Behind the Safety Car, the order was Thompson, De Angelis, Czaczyk, Legrand, Rzadzinski, Michel Bonnet and Bédard.
The race restarted for two last laps. There was a huge scrap between top eight cars again, passing and repassing each other at every corner.
Thompson and Cazacik fought hard over victory in the last chicane and the final straightway, with Thompson winning by inches over his rival. Rzadzinski finished third ahead of Legrand, Dave Gore, Michel Bonnet, De Angelis, Serge Boudrault and Matt Taskinen.
“My objective was to build a small gap between myself and the other guys before we’d get to the hairpin,” Thompson told Motorsport.com.
“In fact, the gap was okay when I turn for the hairpin, but then my car appeared to be pretty slow on the straightaway of the Bassin! Konrad [Czaczyk] caught me up and I knew that passing the last chicane perfectly would be the key to victory. But Konrad was again very quick, and I saw him almost alongside me on the last stretch! Luckily, I cut the line just inches in front of him to claim victory.”
