Gachot's son signs with Schumacher's F4 team

The news comes on the 53rd birthday of Gachot Sr., who started 47 Formula 1 Grands Prix between 1989 and 1995 and won the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours for Mazda alongside Johnny Herbert and Volker Weidler.

16-year-old Louis started his open-wheel career in the French F4 series last year and ended the campaign in 14th, picking up a maiden podium in the Paul Ricard finale.

"French Formula 4 was a brilliant introduction to formula racing for me," Gachot said. "I think I gained a lot of experience in the series. I now feel very well prepared for the ADAC Formula 4 and am looking forward to lining up with the championship-winning team led by Ralf and Gerhard.

"I think I've made the right decision in joining the team. I've already spent a few days with them while testing. Conditions are now perfect for my continued development as a racing driver, and I hope to achieve decent results next season in the ADAC Formula 4."

Gachot Sr. and Schumacher both raced for the Jordan squad in F1, albeit in different stages of their career. They also both contested the 1996 season of the Super GT series, in which Schumacher finished runner-up alongside Naoki Hattori.

"I used to race with Louis' father and am pleased to have him in the team," said Schumacher. "I think he has a good chance of achieving decent results next season. We will now use testing over the coming months to prepare as well as we can for the season to come.

"Louis showed his potential in his tests with us and did an excellent job," added Ungar. "His pleasant personality immediately impressed us. He is a perfect match to our team with regard both to his skill as a driver and his disposition."

The new Schumacher/Ungar squad, which took over operation of the championship-winning HTP Junior Team, has also already signed top German karter Jannes Fittje and girl racer Carrie Schreiner.
