Double pole for Van Lagen

Jaap Van Lagen (Equipe Verschuur) set the best two times in this morning's Eurocup Megane Trophy qualifying session. The Dutchman will therefore start from pole in both races this weekend. He will be joined on the front row in each race by Jean-Philippe Dayraut (Epsilon Euskadi). The two men are clearly determined to make up ground on Ludovic Badey (TDS), who will start from the second row, alongside Luigi Ferrara (Oregon Team).

Several drivers gambled on going out onto the track at the very start of the session. Matthieu Lahaye took the early lead with his first flying lap. On his second flying lap, the Frenchman improved on his best time from the free practice sessions.

Then it was Jeroen Reintjens' (Equipe Verschuur) turn to hold the top time for a few minutes. But Lahaye went quicker again and snatched top spot back with a time of 1'35''797.

With twenty minutes of the session remaining, a dozen or so drivers had still not entered the fray. With thirteen minutes gone, Luigi Ferrara (Oregon Team) went within 4/1000ths of taking the best time.

Midway through the session, Cesar Campanico (Racing for Belgium) grabbed the 3rd best time. The action began to pick up pace at this point of the session. Luigi Ferrara moved ahead of Lahaye, and then Jaap Van Lagen (Equipe Verschuur) and Jean-Philippe Dayraut (Epsilon Euskadi) grabbed the top two times! Ludovic Badey (TDS) then took fifth spot. Dayraut then put in two quick laps, bagging the best two times in the process.

With ten minutes left, the top five is as follows: Dayraut, Van Lagen, Ferrara, Lahaye and Badey. Badey keeps pushing and manages to move into 3rd. But the driver order was far from finalized, as Van Lagen snatched back provisional pole from Dayraut with seven minutes to go! The Dutchman then went even quicker and took the second provisional pole with a 1'35''297 lap.

For the session's final few minutes, Dayraut, and then Van Lagen, came into the pits, leaving Badey, Ferrara and Lahaye to fight it out among themselves. But there were no further changes before the session was brought to a close.

Third and fourth on the start grid for race one, Badey and Ferrara will swap positions for race two. Swiss driver Ralph Meichtry (Race Performance) put in a good overall performance, taking the 6th and 7th best times.

Jaap Van Lagen: "I'm back! I completed two good laps, although I might have gone even quicker if I hadn't been impeded on my flying laps. I am pleased to be clear of my rivals. On such a narrow track, it is essential to start from pole position."

Jean-Philippe Dayraut: "It's important to be on front row, but I really must win to get back into the championship. I like this circuit a lot. The car is very good everything looks good for this afternoon!"
