Van Lagen sets the leaders straight!

Qualifying 1 - The final episode in Eurocup 2004 is still wide open, and keeping us on tenterhooks until the very end! The first qualifying session ahead of race one saw Barth (Interwetten.com) set the pace early on, taking the first provisional pole.

Then championship leader Mondini (EuroInternational) stepped things up a notch, leading the field until 11 minutes to the end of the session, ahead of Neel Jani (Dams).

But that's when things got really moving, as Van Lagen (Interwetten.com) snatched the lead, the young Dutchman still flying from his win at Oschersleben. His team mate Barth tried to match him, but a focussed Jani held onto second spot. Lopez (Dams), Danielsson (SRTS) and Belicchi (AFC Motorsport) slugged it out until the dying seconds to move up to the leaders, and when time was up it was Van Lagen from Jani, Barth, Lopez and Danielsson.

Title favourites Sharp (Jenzer Motorsport) and Mondini (EuroInternational) finished down in 8th and 9th respectively, with Mondini at one point running wide off the track.

Montanari makes his move

Qualifying 2 - The action got even hotter in Dubai, as the second FR V6 qualifier set the track alight! Dams team mates Lopez and Jani seemed to have things wrapped up until just 5 minutes before the flag. But then Van Lagen (Interwetten.com) split Lopez's tiny 49/1000ths lead over Jani, moving into second and an incredible 1/1000th ahead of the Swiss driver!

On the next lap the Dutchman took it one step further and snatched pole, only for Jani to post the exact same time! A lightning performance, but one which has struck FR V6 twice! Back in Brno, Sharp perfectly matched Jani's time, but it's first come first serve, and the Brit had to settle for second. This time Jani was the copycat, meaning Van Lagen held onto his advantage.

But before he had time to celebrate, Montanari (Victory Eng SpA) put in a last gasp scorcher to give him the top spot. A fantastic performance from a fantastic talent.

As for the championship contenders, Mondini (EuroInternational) took fifth and a psychological advantage over Sharp (Jenzer Motorsport), who could do no better than eighth.

But come raceday it will be another matter, and battle will commence!

After this session all the Montanari's times were deleted. The car was not compliant with the technical regulations. The team made an appeal. So Montanari will start on pole on Friday, waiting for the judgement...in some weeks.
