The young Danish racing driver, Mikkel Mac, was the first to test the brand new 2010 Formula Renault 2.0 race car for the Danish KEO Racing team. The test took place on Wednesday at the German Hockenheim racetrack, and it was the first test performed by a customer team outside Renault Sport.
The team hailed the test as a success, and Mac was happy to contribute to the development of the new race car. KEO Racing was the first team to order the new car, and also the first to receive it, as it was cleared for delivery Monday afternoon. Renault Sport had a close cooperation with KEO Racing during the test, in order to gain as much experience as possible with the new car.
The 17 year old Mac has driven most of the cars on offer in the formula racing world; earlier this year he raced in the European Formula BMW series, later he took several victories in the Danish Formula Ford series. He managed to set a long string of fastest times at the Formula Master Rookie test at Hungaroring, so it was only appropriate to cap off 2009 with yet another fast formula race car.
"I have just been testing the new 2010 Formula Renault 2.0 race car at Hockenheimring, " Mikkel explained. "The deal came together rather quickly, as I was in the vicinity of the track. The team shook down the car on Tuesday, making sure that it was ready for me on Wednesday. It was a great opportunity for me to take part in the development of a new race car, and at the same time get some time behind the wheel."
"It was a pleasant experience to try out the new Formula Renault 2.0 race car, which is a huge step over the current generation FR 2.0 series car. The car has paddle shift, and is basically a Formula 3 spec chassis. I was pleasantly surprised; the new car rides as good as the International Formula Master car, which I tested recently in Hungary. It almost as rigid and sharp as the IFM car, but obviously not as powerful."
"The car was delivered with a standard setup from Renault Sport. Apart from that there were a few minor bugs, but that's always the case with new cars. As it is winter, even in the South of Germany, the temperature was below zero when I drove the car. I used the same set of tires all day, thankfully the track was dry and I ended up setting laptimes about 1 second a lap faster on old tires, than the current generation Formula Renault fitted with new tires."
"Looking at the upcoming 2010 season, I have not yet made any decisions. I have received several very interesting offers, all in international formula series. But everything depends on finding the right sponsorship funding, and we are still working on completing that task."
"The test was a success," KEO Racing team boss Kim Olsen explains. "We drove 200 kilometres with the new car, and the only problem we faced was a loose plug. Mikkel is a skilled driver, and we are very happy that he had the opportunity to complete the first test of the car."
KEO Racing will complete a full test of the first car in early January, before the two cars are expected to enter the Formula Renault NEC series.
