Month-long triple treat at Willowbank Raceway.

The fast and furious action will continue at Ipswich's Willowbank Raceway over the next month with the third round of track championships, a hi-tech and imports spectacular before fans are served up a special International feature on March 6 with the return of the Jet Dragsters.

American owner/driver Chuck Haynes will be behind the controls of Volcano and is looking forward to the second leg of this year's Down Under tour.

He's assured drag racing fans some action packed antics when he takes on Australia's Gary Miocevich who will pilot Gravity Storm during the Australia versus U-S-A showdown.

"This will be my tenth tour of racing on Australian tracks and I certainly do enjoy all of the racers and fans," said Haynes.

"After seeing a lot of different venues disappear over the years, it is exciting to see the new track in Sydney and hearing about all of the improvements that have been made to the Willowbank facility.

"I have always enjoyed the crowd friendliness and enthusiasm that they have demonstrated when we have raced here in the past."

Gravity Storm and Volcano are both propelled by the powerful Pratt and Whitney J-60 engines. The engines produce over 6,000 pounds of thrust, inhale 30,000 cubic feet of air per second, and burn 24 gallons of Jet Fuel per quarter mile pass.

The estimated 14,000 horsepower propels these state-of-the-art dragsters and their pilots to low 5 second elapsed times and speeds exceeding 300 miles per hour.

Willowbank Raceway has been blessed with successive top quality weekends of drag racing starting this Saturday with the third round of track championships before Drag Combat is staged at Queensland's home of drag racing on February 21.

The back-to-back event spectacles mark a significant time for the Raceway as officials gear themselves for what promises to be an intense few months in the lead up to the Willowbank Winternationals on June 11-13.

Already the signs are pointing toward a record-breaking year for Australia's top drag racing event and such support is bound to catch on during these preliminary lead up events.

"The track championships round has been added to this year's calendar to give regular entrants more time out on the track, but more importantly for drivers it's a chance to secure points, so the intensity out on the strip is bound to be fever pitch," said Willowbank Raceway General Manager, Harry Rowsell.

"The first round of the inaugural season of Drag Combat will also be staged at the Western Sydney International Dragway this weekend, before the hi-tech and import show makes its way to Willowbank on February 21.

"It's only a four round series so once again points will be vital and this should ensure some exciting side-by-side passes throughout the program."

The Ipswich City Council is fully committed to motorsport in the region and is an active member of the Carnival of Horsepower promotion that seeks to encourage the general public to attend three major events on the Ipswich sporting calendar.

The Willowbank Raceway Winternationals will be held on June 11-13, the Ipswich Turf Club will host the Ipswich Cup on June 19 while V8 Supercars are featured during the 7th round of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship series at Queensland Raceway on July 2-4.
