Clio China Cup Series first sparkle in China, Paul Poon took pole

The renowned Clio Cup race from Europe is finally having its first sparkle in China. Despite the fact that the first two race weekends were held in Le Mans and Nuburgring, there will be 3 more rounds in China. During today's C1 Challenge Show 2009, the Clio China Cup Series showed its attractiveness and caught most of the media attention. During the half-hour qualifying, Hong Kong driver Paul Poon took pole position with a best time of 2:10.135, while Kenneth Lau and superstar Aaron Kwok came second and third, respectively. Kenneth Ma, FRD's president, who introduced the Clio Cup Series to China, also participated in the race and came 4th with tight lap times as the first four had best times all within the 2:11 range.

Before the first race in China, Clio China Cup Series was held in France and Germany, with more than 20 cars participating in each race. Although there were only nine cars attending this weekend's Shanghai round, surely the thrill will be strong in the next upcoming race, to be held in Chengdu. Renault Clio is manufactured by Renault Sports and features a 2.0L engine and 205bhp. The car doesn't need any further modifications but is ready to race from the factory, and is built as a one-make car that can fully reflect a driver's technique and talent.

With unstable weather in Shanghai, there was light rain during qualifying. Drivers tried hard to achieve their best times. Kenneth Lau, who was active in the GT race, took the pole early on in qualifying with a best time of 2:10.276 in his third lap. However, Paul Poon, who races in both AGT and Clio, later grabbed first place with a best time at 2:10.135, only 0.141 seconds ahead of Kenneth Lau. Aaron Kwok was doing a quite well with his first drive in Clio and qualified 3rd. Kenneth Ma, Paul Ip and Stephen Edkins came 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.

Clio China Cup Series will be having its first 2 rounds this weekend and we are looking forward to the first Clio Champion race weekend in China.
