James Thompson third in the overall standings despite being absent
The reigning FIA European Touring Car Cup winner Michel Nykjær has added another tin top title to his CV, when his claimed this year's Danish Touringcar Championship at Jyllandsringen -- a title he also held in 2007.
The final round of the series was plagued by rain, but Michel Nykjær showed himself to be the master of the conditions, taking a very secure pole position and going on the win the first race by a country mile from privateer Jens Møller.
Apart from Michel Nykjær, James Thompson, Jan Magnussen and Henrik Lundgaard also stood a chance of taking the title. The Briton, however, was absent due to his Bathurst 1000 commitments, while Jan Magnussen and Henrik Lundgaard found it difficult to keep up with Michel Nykjær's pace in the first race, especially when they were stuck behind the Seat Leon of Jason Watt. Towards the end of the race the former Formula 3000 driver was sent sideways by Jan Magnussen, but soon afterwards Jan Magnussen and Henrik Lundgaard also tangled, the latter ended up being sent into the side of Jason Watt's car, bending the Chevrolet's rear suspension and forcing him to start race two from the back row.
In this race the field only reached the second corner before Peter Ager and Kasper Jensen tangled, causing a major collision that not only eliminated Peter Ager, but also Jan Magnussen, Michel Nykjær and Henrik Lundgaard further down the field. Instead, a returning Tom Pedersen went on to win the race in the BMW 320si E90 that John Nielsen had raced earlier in the season.
The mechanics of Ree Sport and Chevrolet Motorsport Danmark just managed to the damaged cars of the three title contenders ready for the final race, which Tom Pedersen also managed to win with Jens Møller taking another strong second place. However, the Seat Leon driver could not prevent Per Poulsen from taking the privateer title.
For the three title contenders it was vital to make progress up through the field to defend their positions, but Henrik Lundgaard ended as first looser, as his Chevrolet Lacetti was ill-handling and only just got as high as ninth in the race. Team mate Michel Nykjær was making better progress, but as he had taken over the championship lead from James Thompson, he elected to let Jan Magnussen pass him in order to not jeopardize his situation. The triple Le Mans GT1 winner went on to finish third overall, but as Michel Nykjær finished in fifth position, he managed to secure his second DTC title with a margin of four points. As Henrik Lundgaard only gained few points from the weekend, James Thompson finished third in the overall standings.
