James Thompson won -- and crashed heavily

Casper Elgaard extended his championship lead with first 2010 win

During the weekend James Thompson, England, returned to the Danish Touringcar Championship, where the former WTCC star paid his first visit to the tricky Ring Djursland. And it was a visit that ended with mixed emotions for the Brit. He claimed a secure win in race one, but suffered a heavy crash in race two, where his Honda Accord Euro-R hit two services vehicles.

James Thompson started from pole position for race one, and he claimed a rather easy win from Casper Elgaard, arhus, and Robert Schlunssen, Tyskland, while the two Seat Leon drivers Jason Watt, Herlev, and Jens Møller, Ikast, did not figure in the top battle. Jens Møller thus had to retire with a broken drive shaft.

When the field exited the first corner in the reverse grid second race, Jens Møller and Jason Watt were battling for the lead side by side. They touched with the consequence that Jens Møller's car was sent sideways. While Jens Møller battled to regain control of his Seat, James Thompson tried to pass on the outside, but in a race accident he was hit by the former Lister driver's car. The Honda of James Thompson was thus sent off the tarmac, across the infield and after having been airborne for a split second, it collided with two stationary services vehicles.

James Thompson was was able to leave the car himself. His Honda had several body damages, but the safety cell and the safety tank had prevented the accident from having further consequences.

After the episode Jason Watt was leading from Casper Elgaard and Jens Møller, but midway through the race Jason Watt had to let the two drivers by and pit to try and solve a technical problem. Casper Elgaard got the first win of the season, and with it he extended his lead in the championship.
