Heat hinders performance.

Qualifying

Unfortunately Rickard's qualifying performance was discounted and he was set to start from the back of the grid for race one. This followed a change in engine as a result of some engine damage sustained whilst doing the shakedown test at Millbrook prior to the event. The regulations state that all competitors must use engines for a minimum of two consecutive events and the proviso for starting the race in Jarama was to do so from the back of the grid. James Hanson's qualifying time was slowed when he caught traffic on his flying lap but still managed to take the seventh place on the grid.

Race One

Rickard Rydell No.60: Grid: 18th Finish: 10th
James Hanson No.61: Grid: 7th Finish: 11th

By the end of the first lap, Rydell had made up three places to lie in 15th. Over the course of the twelve remaining laps, he gradually moved up through the field to claim tenth place. After a poor start, Hanson dropped places but regained positions throughout the race to finish 11th.

Classification - Race 1
1 - Fabrizio GIOVANARDI (Alfa - Team Nordauto)
3 - Nicola LARINI (Alfa - Team Nordauto)
5 - Jorg MULLER (BMW Team Deutschland)
2 - Dirk MULLER (BMW Team Deutschland)
4 - Paolo RUBERTI (Alfa - AGS Motorsport)
6 - Tom CORONEL (BMW - Carly Motors - Team Isert)

Race 2
Rickard Rydell No.60: Grid: 10th Finish: Retired
James Hanson No.61: Grid: 11th Finish: Retired

An incident at the first corner, where De Simone (BMW) pushed Hanson, damaging his car led to loss of position and had an impact on the handling of the car. He made up places by late braking and then took three laps to pass Ferrier (Alfa Romeo). By lap eight of the thirteen lap race, Rydell was 10th and Hanson 11th when Rydell retired followed by Hanson's retirement on the final lap. Both cars suffered from the same problem, early indications suggest that this was a heat & fuel system problem.

Classification - Race 2
3 - Nicola LARINI (Alfa - Team Nordauto)
1 - Fabrizio GIOVANARDI (Alfa - Team Nordauto)
2 - Dirk MULLER (BMW Team Deutschland)
4 - Jorg MULLER (BMW Team Deutschland)
5 - Fredrik EKBLOM (BMW Team Belgium)
6 - Peter KOX (BMW - Carly Motors - Team Isert)

Rickard Rydell:

"I was happy with the car's handling but we seem to have a problem with heat. The engine performance was not up to that at Brno and then the fuel system seems to have suffered too. It's very disappointing but now we need to look at what to improve."

James Hanson:

"It's not been a good weekend in terms of results, but I've learnt more and have shown that I'm with Rickard on pace now."

Dave Benbow, Volvo S60 Racing Team manager:

"It's been a difficult weekend. Everyone has worked very hard in extremely hot conditions, so to go home with nothing is disappointing. We need to look at the data now and identify the problem. Initial indications are that the problems could be related to fuel pressure and the high ambient temperatures. We will need to investigate further. This is the first time the car has been in race conditions in such high temperatures [35 degrees Celsius] and it looks to have been pushed to a limit that we need to investigate before the race in Sweden in three weeks time."

The team has three weeks to prepare before the next round of the ETCC at Anderstorp, Sweden on June 30th.
