TERRY MOSS CLINCHES CHAMPIONSHIP

KILLARNEY, ZA <COLIN WINDELL>: Audi A4 driver Terry Moss is the new South African Super Touring Champion after two second places at the final round of the AA Fleetcare Super Touring Series at Killarney, Cape Town on Saturday was enough to clinch the series.

Wet, cold and windy conditions played right into the hands of the four- wheel drive Rothmans Audi A4 cars with Moss starting the day just nine points ahead of team mate Chris Aberdein. At the end it was Aberdein who won both races with Moss second in both.

Shaun van der Linde, the only other driver with a chance of taking the title with a last-minute upset, fared badly in practice and was involved in a startline incident in the first race - finally finishing fifth and then out of the points in the second race.

For the third time this year a startline pileup brought out the red flag, sidelining Craig Baird's BMW Envirocar, Giniel de Villiers' Nissan Sentra and the Scania Audi 80 of Hennie Groenewald.

Aberdein went away from the restart to win a second ahead of Moss with Michael Briggs (Opel Vectra) some 11 seconds further back and under pressure from Duncan Vos (BP Nissan Sentra), Shaun van der Linde (BMW 318i), Deon Joubert (BMW 318i) and Anthony Taylor (Castrol Toyota Camry).

The second race got away to a clean start with both Audis simply vanishing into the distance - their final tally for the season showing seven wins for Aberdein, five for Moss and 12 out of 20 races for Audi.

Nissan achieved its best result of the season with Giniel de Villiers finishing third behind Moss and followed home by team mate Duncan Vos. Julian Bailey (Minolta Camry) was fifth with a new lap record to his credit.
