SOLVING THE CRISIS
JOHANNESBURG <Colin Windell>: The crisis in South African Super Touring racing following the withdrawal of Toyota and Delta (Opel) for next year appears to be heading for a positive resolution following a meeting of manufacturers this week.
The South African Touring Car Association (TOCA) met with manufacturers and have agreed in principle to a revised set of rules and regulations that will effectively localise touring car racing rather than being bound to the FIA regulations.
According to TOCA chairman Graham Duxbury the new rules will involve cars similar in appearance to the existing super tourers but with applied restrictions such as tyres - allowing local tyre manufacturers the opportunity of competing for the first time in touring car racing.
"We are busy levelling the playing field where all South African manufacturers and importers have a chance of entering and winning in the new formula," said Duxbury. "TOCA and the manufacturers present at the meeting firmly believe we have come up with rules and regulations that may well lead to a worldwide trend. The rising costs of touring car racing are not unique to South Africa and we think we have the solution."
Full details of the revised rules have yet to be released, pending final agreement by all the manufacturers currently involved in touring car racing and the possible commitment to the new formula by two manufacturers not previously involved.
