YOULDEN TACKLES MORE V8 POWER

Last weekend he was fighting it out at the front of the NZV8s Championship field at Pukekohe. This weekend he will be taming the power of the Powerbuilt Tools/Bed Rumours Handcrafted Beds Ford Mustang at Manfeild.

Australian Luke Youlden has a very busy motor racing schedule here in New Zealand this summer and that programme continues in the Manawatu this Saturday and Sunday when he contests Round 2 of the Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series.

Youlden is a racer through and through and is relishing his drives in the brutally fast Ford. "I can't wait to get behind the wheel of the Mustang again", he said as he prepared to leave Pukekohe last Sunday after emerging from the opening round of the NZV8s Series 4th in the championship. "The Mustang is certainly sharpening me up. Everything happens so fast, you have to be very switched on. It definitely helps my reactions when I step back into the Powerbuilt Falcon for the NZV8s Championship".

Youlden was sensational at the opening round of this series in Taupo at Labour Weekend. He won the round after qualifying quickest by a comfortable margin and then winning the first two races of the weekend. In the first he overcame a 145 second handicap while his second win the following day came after an amazing drive on dry weather slick tyres in wet, slippery conditions. The third and final race of the weekend again had the Australian starting a massive 145 seconds behind the leaders. Once again he scythed through the field but was unable to catch Blair McDonald of Waimauku who crossed the line 7.28 seconds ahead of Luke in his HSV R8 Clubsport Commodore V8. Youlden in turn managed to pip third placed man Steve Cox in his F40 Silhouette by 0.015 seconds.

When the weekend results were tallied Youlden left Taupo in the championship lead with 64 points. Roger Williams of Auckland is just 5 points behind followed by Cox and Grant Brennan of Tauranga. In addition to his two race wins and championship lead Youlden also claimed a new lap record of 1 minute 30.427 seconds to put the icing on the cake.

Competitors in the series will face four races this weekend. The first, on Saturday afternoon, will be a handicap grid start event followed by a rolling start race the next morning. On Sunday afternoon the series combatants have another handicap grid start event with the final outing for the impressive field the Flying Farewell late in the day.

Youlden's main competition at Manfeild will include Brennan in his new Corvette, Cox in the F40 Silhouette Turbo, Andy Greenslade of Tauranga, Williams in his Mercedes 450SL Chev V8, McDonald and Robert Jack in a Chev V8 powered Escort.

The field will be swelled by the addition of a further three entries this weekend including a Porsche GT3, adding even more variety to the high performance Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series grid.
