Clio racer closes on FIA GT drive.

Experienced Clio racer, Rick Pearson will test German-based Wieth Racing's Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello in early January with a view to driving for the team in the 2003 FIA GT Championship.

"It's always been my intention to use my time in the European Clio Trophy as a springboard to GT racing so I'm delighted to have been invited to test with Wieth Racing," Pearson commented. "Their new Ferrari 550 GTS has been developed specifically for the 2003 FIA GT Championship and has already shown itself to be a good, reliable race car on initial long distance testing runs."

The 550 GTS was most recently put through its paces by Niko Wieth -- elder son of team principal Franz- and GT stalwart Wolfgang Kaufmann at Vallelunga. "Although we weren't trying to break lap records, its clear that the car has a vast potential," Kaufmann said. "Except for some small incidents, I was able to drive fast laps constantly. The test was a big step forward and gave us valuable information regarding performance and competitiveness."

Pearson, whose best result in the Clio Trophy was ninth place on aggregate at the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix support race, is also pursuing a drive in the International Porsche SuperCup. "I'm confident that my two years racing in Europe has given me a sound basis for an FIA GT campaign but I still need to tie up some more sponsorship to finance a full season in the Ferrari.

"At this stage the alternative appears to be the Porsche SuperCup, supporting the Formula One Grand Prix in Europe and America. Although the choice of championship will ultimately depend on the profile required by my sponsors, I'm in the process of setting up a test in a Porsche SuperCup car and expect to make a final decision in the next few weeks."
