FORT WORTH-DALLAS (Feb. 5, 2000) - Jared Whitton, Carrollton, got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon as he captured his third Winter Shootout Legends auto racing feature of the series at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway.
Rod Slack, Fort Worth, collected his initial Pro Legends division feature victory of the series in the 25-lap Pro/Masters main event. Steve Haag, Keller, stretched his Charger Legends win streak to a pair by leading the entire 25-circuit run. Derek Shumaker, Conroe, topped the 15-lap Bandolero headliner.
Whitton rebounded from his runnerup finish two weeks ago to Ryan Lawler, Colleyville, and led the 25-lap race around the one-fifth mile banked paved track flag-to-flag. Whitton bested Kelly Vinson, New Braunfels, by 0.87 seconds with the winner's brother Josh finishing third.
Slack dominated the combined Pro/Masters division feature, winning by a half-lap over fellow Pro division driver Steve Gottsacker, University Park. Mike Nowels, Lewisville, was the leading Masters finisher at third place.
Haag survived a hectic 25-lap Charger feature for beginning Legends chauffeurs. His second consecutive triumph came in a wire-to-wire manner although he had to work through heavy lapped traffic late in the race. James Southerland, North Richland Hills, charged from 20th starting position to runnerup at race end, just a half length behind the victor. Steve Fleming, Dallas, took third.
Shumaker and Ben Pigeon, Abilene, dueled late in the Bandolero feature for the victory with Shumaker claiming the win by 0.75 seconds. Eight-year-old John Gottsacker, University Park, finished third, right on Pigeon's rear bumper.
The fifth round of the Winter Shootout series resumes tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 6 at Lil' Texas Motor Speedway. The first race will begin at 1:00 p.m.
