Top 10 photos of 2015: honorable mentions

Another racing season comes to a close. Last week we shared our picks for the top 10 photos of 2015. This week, we present our master working list of sorts: the honorable mentions. Enjoy!

Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, Volkswagen Polo WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport

Carlos Sainz Jr., Scuderia Toro Rosso STR10
Sparks are the quickest way into our editors' hearts.
Aleix Espargaro, Team Suzuki MotoGP
A different angle, from above, always makes things more interesting. And the effort taken to get a higher view is often rewarded with impressive images.
Race action with a Delta MD-90 touching down at Daytona International Airport
Excellent timing!
#520 Kamaz: Dmitry Sotnikov, Igor Devyatkin, Andrey Aferin
The mighty Kamaz on display.
#26 KTM: Toby Price
We love this low angle and silhouette image. Note the cracked/scorched mud. This is Dakar at its best.
#5 Black Falcon Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3: Abdulaziz Al Faisal, Hubert Haupt, Yelmer Buurman, Jaap van Lagen
We often talk about how magical the Nürburgring is and that it is so scenic that a photographer could shoot there for a month straight and never take the same picture twice. It's one of the last epic places to photograph racing.
Daniil Kvyat, Red Bull Racing RB11
In your face action from Monaco. Bonus points for none of the safety workers paying attention to oncoming traffic. Tsk tsk.
Chris Forsberg on fire
Fire-breathing drift action!
Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, Volkswagen Polo WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport
We all giggled at this fun image.
Kevin Harvick, Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet
It's not always easy to create a "mood" in sports/racing photography but this is pretty close to being perfect.
Race winner Valentino Rossi, Yamaha Factory Racing
Great emotion from the great Vale.
Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul, Hyundai i20 WRC, Hyundai Motorsport
We love unique angles and this drone (maybe?) shot is spectacular.
Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, Volkswagen Polo WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport
Fighter jet, helicopter, Polo. Only in rallying.
Night lights at Le Mans
No lights are more famous than those from La Sarthe.
Pitlane ambiance
Le Mans pitlane is magical, and just as thrilling as track action to photograph. You have to keep your head on a swivel to both keep a look out for interesting subjects and especially to avoid being on TV, for all the wrong reasons.
Sunrise at Dunlop bridge with clouds
Another iconic shot from Le Mans.
Winner Jeff Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet
The NASCAR legend made headlines when he won at Martinsville to make it into the Chase.
Charlie Kimball, Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet crashes
This very nearly got into the top 10 photos of the year. The exact moment of impact for Charlie Kimball as he pulls his hands into his chest to brace for the shock.
Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull Racing RB11 with flo-vis paint on his helmet
Flo-vis makes for interesting images. Especially when it's on the driver's helmet and visor (can you see us Daniel?)
Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda Team
Grown men on tiny bikes. Winning combination, especially when some of them are multi-GP winners and champions.
Fans watch podium festivities
V8 Supercars is THE premiere racing series in Australia and when you win, the atmosphere can be electric.
Andrea Iannone, Ducati Team hits a seagull
Talk about great (or terrible) timing!
Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila, Volkswagen Polo WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport
Rally photography affords so many possibilities and allows photographers to get so very close to the action. It's a nice change of pace from the huge distances of a circuit.
Stéphane Lefebvre and Stéphane Prévot, Citroën DS3 WRC, Citroën World Rally Team
Perfectly composed and lit photo. The effort that goes into lighting rallying can't be understated. Perfect execution. This is one we'd like to have hanging on the wall.
