When Helmut Marko dropped in on the penultimate Formula 3 European Championship round at the Red Bull Ring, he reportedly blurted to some that ‘I’ve got Vips!’ He hadn’t, because this exquisitely talented Estonian was also entertaining an offer from another F1 junior programme, but within a couple of weeks it was settled, and Vips was heading to the Red Bull Junior stable. Vips's rookie F3 season came with none of the pressure of Motopark team-mate Ticktum, and he did make mistakes, but by summer he was arguably the quickest driver around. His qualifying at a wet Misano was extraordinary.
