HOLDEN Commodore driver Gary MacDonald scored the first championship point in the new V8 BRute Muster motor racing series with a dominant run in qualifying today for the first round at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn.
MacDonald's fastest lap of 1 minute 11.39 seconds was almost a second ahead of second-placed Wayne Park, who drove a Ford Falcon.
Rod Wilson was third in a Commodore.
The six-round V8 BRute Muster is for off-the-showroom-floor Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon utilities. Only limited performance and safety modifications are allowed, in the interests of controlling costs and encouraging close racing.
MacDonald said he was surprised to be much faster than the rest of the field, despite the tight regulations.
"I did the time on old tyres and didn=B9t think we were going that fast. However, although I=B9ve earned a point for winning qualifying, pole position tomorrow is actually decided by ballot so it won=B9t be an advantage to me on the track," he said.
"The field will be well and truly mixed up on the grid tomorrow and whereever I start it=B9s going to be a challenge for me to win."
The V8 BRutes will have three eight-lap races on the 2.2 km track, with the drivers expected to be cheered from the sidelines by participants in a specially-organised ute muster for roadgoing utes. <pre> RESULTS (Qualifying): 1.
