Bachler and Monien triumph at Assen
The winners at the foreign debut of the ADAC Formula Masters powered by Volkswagen at Assen are Klaus Bachler and Nico Marvin Monien. At this junior series' third event of the season the fans in the Netherlands witnessed another premiere: for the first time, the talented youngsters, who drive identical Formula ADAC cars powered by Volkswagen, had to contest a race in rain. The junior driver among the 20 contenders to handle the wet conditions best was the 16-year-old Austrian Klaus Bachler. During the first weekend he relegated Armando Parente from Portugal and the Dane Kevin Magnussen to places two and three in a commanding win.
In the second race on Sunday, Nico Marvin Monien, in a veritable tyre gamble, was not to be beaten. While the TT Circuit Assen was drying off, the 18-year-old - after a courageous change to slicks - fought his way forward from the rear of the field to celebrate his first win in the ADAC Formula Masters. The Finn Emma Kimilainen, who had been leading the race for a long time, finished second ahead of Armando Parente, who was again in a good position. In the drivers' standings Klaus Bachler, who finished sixth in the second heat, defended his lead with a score of 66 points. Parente, with a double podium exploit, closed the gap to Nurburgring double winner Burkhard Maring (both 57 points).
