Eriksson dominates second Daytona final
Sebastian Eriksson claimed victory in the second element of the Daytona Red Bull Global Rallycross double-header on Sunday in his Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta.
Former IndyCar racer Jeff Ward qualified on the pole in his Ganassi-run Ford, but elected to start from the inside of the second row. Eriksson instead took the inside pole from Ken Block and Eriksson’s teammate Joni Wiman.
Eriksson, Block and Ward took their joker lap at the first opportunity, and although Block tried to hang around the outside of Eriksson at Turn 2 on to the dirt, the Swede held on.
Block hit Eriksson at Turn 2 on lap two, and then got into a shoving match with Arpin, that promoted Ward to third.
Speed delayed his joker lap until lap three, moving up to third past Ward.
Sixth-placed Foust took his joker on lap four, moving him from sixth to fifth. Speed and Ward then collided at Turn 2, promoting Foust to third. Speed was forced out with a broken VW Beetle.
Eriksson cruised clear by 2.5s by half distance, with Block clear of the dueling Foust, Arpin and Wiman.
Arpin grabbed third after contact with Foust, with Wiman also getting involved in the highly physical contest. Wiman crashed out, his suspension appearing to break with just a couple of laps remaining.
Eriksson took the flag by 1.8s from Block. Arpin punted Ward into a half spin at the final corner, but Ward held on to finish third on his debut weekend. However, those positions were swapped by race control, with Arpin promoted to third as Ward was penalised for rough driving.
Foust slipped to fifth with an ailing VW Beetle. Nelson Piquet Jr finish sixth.
