For the second event in a row, a Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver swept a Red Bull Global Rallycross doubleheader—only this time it was Tanner Foust doing the winning.

Saturday recap

Supercar points leader Ken Block ended a Barbados event on his roof for the second year in a row, hitting a dirt berm before the jump and sliding to a halt on his roof during the last chance qualifier. Missing his second main event in three races cost Block the championship lead and opened the door for any one of his rivals to step in. In the main event, Tanner Foust jumped out to an early lead, with Scott Speed determined to make it a 1-2 finish. Polesitter Patrik Sandell attempted to clear Speed coming out of the Kobalt Tools Joker Lap on the final lap, but slammed into Speed’s left front. Though both cars limped to the finish with Sandell claiming second and Speed third, a penalty dropped Sandell to 10th and elevated Speed back to second place. Defending Supercar champion Joni Wiman was thus elevated to the podium.

Sunday recap

Austin Dyne won his first career pole on Sunday, but couldn’t convert it into a semifinal victory or front row start in the main event as Foust and Nelson Piquet Jr. claimed the two semifinals. At the start of the final, Foust jumped back out to the lead, while Sandell slid into the second corner with too much speed and knocked Block out of the racing line, earning his second penalty in as many days (this one simply a stop-and-go). Speed didn’t get to Foust’s rear bumper right away, but established himself in second by the end of the first lap and never yielded. Though he couldn’t clear his teammate, Speed remained well clear of Piquet Jr., who held off Wiman for third place.

Quotes

A selection of quotes from Sunday’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados, the eleventh round of the 2015 Red Bull GRC season:

Tanner Foust, #34 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle: “One thing that I’m really proud of is that after this weekend, the championship is wrapped up by a Volkswagen. Midway through the season, we turned this season into a testing year because we had a few mechanical issues, some hard races, and some zeroes. We were so far back in the championship that it didn’t seem possible to claw back. Scott made a great call to get a weight penalty removed for having an electronic throttle, we put a mechanical throttle in there, and it took 100 pounds out of the car. That really turned the season around.”

Scott Speed, #41 Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross Beetle: “There’s no question that rallycross in general through the last couple of years has been more conducive to the style of racing that Nelson and I run. Tanner has done a great job of adapting to that, and obviously he’s found the pace. It’s made for a really great team for us, because we’ve got different strengths, and it works great for both of us. We’ve got a dream team here.”

Nelson Piquet Jr., #07 SH Racing Rallycross Ford Fiesta ST: “I think Sulli and SH Rallycross, the organization we’ve built around this car, we’ve become very good. There are a lot of manufacturers out there, and a lot of other Fords, but we were the best finishing Ford today, so it shows that we have a good, solid team and we work hard. The important part is that we have all great guys on the team that know what they’re doing, and we can make everything work. That’s the most difficult thing sometimes—finding a way to put together a good team.”

Fast facts

A collection of facts from Saturday and Sunday’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados, the tenth and eleventh rounds of the 2015 Red Bull GRC season:

• Tanner Foust earned the sixth and seventh victories of his Red Bull GRC career by virtue of sweeping the weekend’s doubleheader. Foust is the driver in Red Bull GRC history to win two rallycross race events in a doubleheader event, following teammate Scott Speed in Los Angeles last month.

• Speed earned his sixth and seventh podium finishes of the season in Barbados by finishing second in both events. He earned podium finishes in each of the final six doubleheader races of 2015. With 333 points, Speed scored the most points in 2015 doubleheaders.

• Speed and Foust are now the only remaining championship-eligible drivers in Supercar, guaranteeing Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross its first Red Bull GRC championship. Olsbergs MSE won each of the first four Supercar championships.

• Volkswagen has never lost a Supercar final at Bushy Park Barbados.

• Joni Wiman earned his first podium finish of 2015 in Saturday’s final by finishing third. Wiman’s previous podium came in Las Vegas last November, where he clinched the Supercar championship.

• Nelson Piquet Jr.’s third place finish on Sunday was his fourth podium finish of the 2015 season and first in a doubleheader event. Piquet has never finished worse than fifth overall in three Barbados starts.

• Patrik Sandell took his Supercar-leading 11th heat victory of the season in the first round on Saturday. Sandell has now won 17 heats in his Supercar career, good for fourth alltime behind Ken Block (38), Tanner Foust (34), and Scott Speed (27).

• Ken Block has finished ninth or worse in each of his previous four starts. He has not won a heat race since Detroit I in July.

• Ford clinched a share of the 2015 Manufacturer’s Championship in Barbados by finishing second in both events. Volkswagen can tie Ford for the Manufacturer’s Championship in Las Vegas if and only if a Volkswagen wins and a championshipeligible Subaru beats all Fords in the Supercar final.
