Angelelli, Magnussen taste victory in Montreal

SunTrust Racing's Max Angelelli kept his Rolex Sports Car Series championship hopes alive on Friday, winning the Montreal 400K at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. With his second win of the season, Angelelli now trails Ganassi Racing's Scott Pruett by two points in the Daytona Prototype drivers' championship standings. Pruett and his co-driver, Memo Rojas, finished fifth in the No. 01 Lexus Riley.

"I just had a fantastic car and I must thank the team," said Angelelli, who shared the SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley with Jan Magnussen. "The team, as usual, did a great pit stop, and that allowed me to go out in front of the No. 99 and the No 01, which were the cars we were looking after. The SunTrust car was very strong, very fast. I think we found something that will help us through the end of the season. Obviously, Jan was so strong and that definitely helped the whole situation. I think now we understand something in the car that we didn't understand before, and that will allow us to have a pretty competitive car the rest of the way. Finally, we can go to the race weekends and feel like we really have a shot at the win. That hasn't been happening for a long time, now."

The No. 91 Riley-Mathews Pontiac turned in its best performance of the year, finishing second in the hands of Jim Matthews and Marc Goosens. "We have had a lot of bad luck this year, some inflicted on ourselves," said Mathews. "Marc did a great job in the car today. He took to the track right away on Thursday and was able to run fast times all weekend. The team put a good car under us. The Riley/Pontiac combination was the one to have this weekend. A few more green laps at the end, we may have been one place better."

Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty, winners of four of the last five Rolex Series races, came home third in the Bob Stallings Racing Pontiac Riley despite some problems in the pits. "That was classic Grand-Am racing - a lot of fun, some nasty tough stuff and some great passes," said Gurney. "We've had a lot of good luck for a lot of races and we finally had a little problem in the pits - it's unfortunate, but those things happen. For a while after we came back out, I didn't think I'd be able to climb back as far as I did. But I had a great car and I was able to capitalize on every opportunity that opened up in front of me. Everyone was driving really hard and sliding around, the tires were done and we had an extra restart or two to close things up. Considering where we could have ended up, I think we came away with a pretty good result. We're very much in this championship now." Indeed, Gurney and Fogarty are nine points behind Pruett in the driver's championship.

In the GT class, Andy Lally and R.J. Valentine won for the fifth time this year in the No. 66 TRG Porsche. The No. 87 Farnbacher Loles Motorsports Porsche of Dirk Werner and Bryce Miller finished second - though Werner was in position to win the race until last lap contact with the No. 69 Mazda RX- 8 allowed Lally to sneak by for the win. Tom Nastasi and Terry Borcheller rounded out the top-three in the No. 15 Blackforest Motorsports Ford Mustang Cobra GT. With one race remaining, Lally and Valentine are now five points behind Werner in the GT class standings.

The Daytona Prototype division of the Rolex Sports Car Series will return to the track Friday, August 10 at Watkins Glen International.
