Borcheller leads standings after season opener

Defending Champ Takes Early Rolex Series Points Lead

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 5, 2004) -- Defending Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series driver champion Terry Borcheller and teammates Forest Barber, Andy Pilgrim and Christian Fittapaldi took an early lead in the Daytona Prototype point standings following their victory at the Rolex 24 At Daytona last weekend.

The Bell Motorsports No. 54 Kodak team and its foursome of drivers hold a three-point lead over Doran-Lista Racing and drivers Didier Theys, Jan Lammers and Marc Goossens, which finished second in the Daytona Prototypes class at the twice-around-the-clock classic. Doran-Lista driver Fredy Lienhard did not receive any points for his stint at the wheel of the No. 27 Lexus Doran JE4 because he did not drive under green-flag conditions.

Andy Wallace, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart round out the top-10 Daytona Prototype drivers, each with a five-point deficit to the leader. Their Howard-Boss Motorsports No. 2 CITGO machine is third in the team standings, also five points down.

Orbit Racing and drivers Johnny Mowlem, Mike Fitzgerald and Robin Liddell have the lead in the GT class standings. However, Orbit drivers Joe and Jay Policastro did not receive any points for their time in the No. 44 Porsche GT3 RS because they only drove while under full-course caution.

Johannes van Overbeek, Lonnie Pechnik, Mike Rockenfeller and Peter Cunningham are tied three-points behind the GT leaders. The foursome finished second in class at the Rolex 24 in the Flying Lizard Motorsports No. 74 Porsche. Red Bull BE Racing drivers Andrea Montermini, Dieter Quester, Klause Engelhorn and Philipp Peter are all five points down to the GT leader following their third-place finish in class.

Greg Pootmans, Jean-Francois Dumoulin, Marc Lieb and Robert Julien are the first points leaders in the Rolex Series' new Super Grand Sport (SGS) class. The drivers captured top honors in the class at the Rolex 24 in the Doncaster Racing No. 91 Porsche GT3 Cup.

Andy Lally, John Littlechild, Marc Bunting, Michael Levitas and Randy Pobst are all tied with a three-point deficit to the SGS leaders. The five drivers combined to place the TPC Racing No. 38 Porsche second in the SGS class over the weekend. Doncaster Racing's other car - the No. 71 Porsche - rounds out the top-three in the team championship standings. Its drivers Dave Lacey, Greg and Mark Wilkins and Kenny Wilden are five points behind their teammates in the leading car.

In the manufacturer standings, Pontiac has a three-point lead over Lexus in the Daytona Prototype points, while Doran holds a five-point advantage over Crawford in the chassis standings. Porsche tops both the GT and SGS standings. The German marque has a five point margin over Ferrari in the GT class and has already proven its dominance in the SGS class with its 17-point lead over Chevrolet.

The Rolex Sports Car Series will return to action in the Grand Prix of Miami, part of the Toyota INDY 300 weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, February 27-29.
