DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 23, 2000) – Brian Redman, one of the legendary stars of international sports car racing, will make his return to competition at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, June 29, in the Paul Revere 250.

Redman will drive a SportsRacer Light entry for the 70-lap, 250-mile Grand American Road Racing Association event, which will begin immediately following 8 p.m. NASCAR Winston Cup Bud Pole Qualifying for the July 1 running of the Pepsi 400.

Redman will drive one of four European entries in the SportsRacer Light class, challenging four-time winners Larry Oberto and Ryan Hampton in the Grand-Am’s newest class.

Ironically, this will mark Redman’s first appearance as a driver for his Redman Bright team, which competes in the European-based SportsRacing World Cup. He will join Peter Owen and Mark Smithson, who won SR II honors in the recent SRWC round at Monza, Italy, in the Redman Bright Nissan Pilbeam.

“I’ll be driving for my team for the first time, and this will be the first time I’ve driven in the Paul Revere 250,” said Redman. “For some reason, I’ve never driven in that race in the past, but I ran in the Rolex 24 many times. I’m really looking forward to the race. It should be fun, and we hope to be competitive in the SportsRacer Lights class.”

Redman won the 1976 running of the Rolex 24, joining Peter Gregg and John Fitzpatrick in a BMW CSL. He won 20 international sports car races, and was a member of the World Manufacturer’s Championship-winning team four times. In American competition, he dominated the Formula 5000 series, winning the championship three times from 1974 through 1976. He won the 1981 IMSA Camel GT championship in a Lola prepared by John Bright. The 60-year-old Englishman raced a GT-3 car in the Rolex 24 two years ago, with his last factory ride in an Aston-Martin in 1989 in Donington, England. Redman continues to remain active in vintage and historic competition.

Bright and Redman formed their race team in 1996 for F3000 competition. Last year they moved to SportsRacer Lights competition, winning the final race of the season.

The Redman Bright entry is one of four European cars which will compete in the Paul Revere 250. Chuck Goldsborough of Baltimore will drive in the factory Pilbeam, while Sweden’s Niklas Loven leads a two-car Alfa Romeo-powered entry for Raffaele Tampolli Engineering.

Practice for the Paul Revere 250 begins at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, with qualifying beginning at 9:15 p.m. The 70 lap, 250-mile race will be held under the lights on Thursday, June 29, immediately following the 8 p.m. Bud Pole Qualifying session for the Pepsi 400.

Tickets are still available for the Paul Revere 250/Pepsi 400 weekend at Daytona International Speedway. For information, call the Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-7223, or visit the web site, www.daytonaintlspeedway.com. For additional Grand-Am information, visit www.grand-am.com.
