MOWLEM, SAMAX TEAM CONFIDENT AFTER DAYTONA TESTING
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2006) -- British racing star Johnny Mowlem knows how to win the Rolex 24 at Daytona. He has the winning feeling again after the Rolex Sports Car Series teams completed their three-day test session at Daytona International Speedway.
Mowlem is a former GT champion at Daytona and has finished on the overall podium three times after the world-famous endurance race. He'll drive the SAMAX Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3 in the GT class in the 2006 race and Mowlem said the testing left the team confident.
"I know what it takes to win here and I can tell you that this team's car and drivers are fast enough," Mowlem said. "We had an excellent test. Now we just need to work on all the reliability areas to ensure we leave as little to that all important luck as possible!"
Mowlem recorded the team's fastest lap around Daytona's 3.56-mile road course, which includes the infield and portions of the superspeedway. His best lap of one minute, 53.5 seconds ranked third on the GT class lap chart after the 3 day test.
Mowlem will share the driving duties with veteran David Shep, Bryan Sellers and German Porsche Junior Team drivers Lance David and Jan Seyffarth. The race is scheduled for Jan 28-29.
One of Britain's most successful and personable sports car drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2004, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One.
A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
