Daytona24: Dane Cameron race report

DANE CAMERON PUTS ...

DANE CAMERON PUTS #2 BEYER RACING/uberwurx CAR IN ROLEX 24 TOP-BEFORE RETIRING DUE TO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS IN HOUR 15

Rising racing star Dane Cameron, making his first-ever Rolex 24 start in a Daytona Prototype, ran in the top-5 during the early laps of the race driving the #2 Beyer Racing/uberwurx Chevrolet Crawford. Co-driving with Jared Beyer, Cort Wagner, Jan-Dirk Leuders and Romeo Kapudija, the Beyer Racing team showed considerable strength and speed before issues related to a tire failure early in the race put the car out of the 48th annual Rolex 24 at Daytona at the 15-hour mark.

After missing qualifying, the Beyer Racing team started from last place in the DP class with Cameron at the wheel; he drove a triple stint, spending the first three hours of the race in the car and the team was ultimately credited with a 14th-place finish in the Daytona Prototype class.

"We were able to pass a bunch of cars on the start and in the first couple of laps before the first full-course caution came out," said Cameron, who ran the 2009 Rolex 24 in the GT class with Racers Edge Motorsports. "We stayed out and so were in the top-5 for several laps while the incident was cleaned up, and when the race went green again, we were ready to go racing. Unfortunately the right rear tire blew at about 190 mph as I was coming off the banking into Turn One and damaged both the bodywork and the cooling system. They Beyer Racing crew did a tremendous job of keeping the car on track and in competition until 6am when they finally had to call it a day. I'm impressed with the car and the team and hope to work with them again during the 2010 Grand-Am season."

The Beyer Racing team, founded by entrepreneur Jeff Beyer in 2006, completed its first Grand-Am race at Virginia International Raceway on April 27, 2008. Running a full season with a 2-car effort in 2009, the team scored a string of top-10 finishes, including 4th in Montreal at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. For 2010, Beyer Racing will focus on competing for the 2010 Grand-Am championship with a single-car program. Driving the full season will be San Antonio, Texas native Jared Beyer, a kartinghttp://www.theracesite.com/client_images/albums/5284_39.jpg champion and engineering student who started racing at age 12. With two years of Grand-Am experience under his belt already, Beyer and the Beyer Racing team, backed by uberwurx, a manufacturer of premium car care products.

Cameron arrives at this major step in his career via an accomplished climb up through the ranks of both open-wheel and endurance racing. Last season, Cameron, a native of Sonoma, California, co-drove the #30 Racers Edge Mazda RX-8 in the full 2009 Rolex Series GT season. In 2008, Cameron drive for Genoa Racing in the ultra-competitive 2008 Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda, scoring two podium finishes, five top-5s and one pole position to finish 7th in the championship during his rookie season. In 2007, he was both series champion and Rookie of the Year in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear with three wins, six pole positions, five podium finishes and two top-5s. As the winner of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder scholarship, his drive in the Atlantic series was paid for by Mazda.

In 2006, Cameron was the F2000 Rookie of the Year and finished second in the championship. As a Team USA Scholarship driver, he won the 2006 Palmer Audi Winter Championship in Europe. In 2005, he was the SCCA Formula Jim Russell Series champion and Rookie of the Year. His karting career, beginning in 2000, was similarly successful, including the 2003 Jim Russell Karting 80cc Junior Shifter Championship and a 2004 finalist in the Red Bull Driver Search.

"This felt like a really logical progression of my career," said Cameron. "I felt very comfortable in the car and working with the Beyer Racing team. This is actually my second race in a Daytona Prototype; I co-drove with Michael Valiante in the Finlay Motorsports car in the 2007 series finale at Miller Motorsports Park. I think the Beyer Racing team and the Crawford Chevrolet package have a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to the next opportunity to get behind the wheel."
