Michael Shank Racing working to find the balance at Fontana

Fontana, CA (1 April 05)--The Michael Shank Racing team is still looking for speed in their Pontiac-Riley after a difficult first day of practice at California Speedway for Sunday's Ferrari Maserati 400 with drivers Paul Mears Jr. and Mike Borkowski. The team posted a fastest lap time of 1.35.573 seconds on the 2.82-mile road course, and while the time is just over a second off from the fastest of the day, the Michael Shank Racing team is looking for more.

"We haven't been able to get the most out of the car today," said award-winning team owner Mike Shank. "But we went through a lot of our program for the day, and both drivers got a lot of time in the car, so it still wasn't a bad day. But after running so well at Homestead, we know we can be running up front, so it's just a bit frustrating. We have some very talented engineers on our team, though, and I am pretty confident we can improve tomorrow."

Borkowski, who qualified the car third for the last race, echoed Shank's feelings about the car and the weekend.

"We have been pretty conservative with our tires, as we are limited on how many sets we get each weekend, so by the end of the day the tires were pretty much all used up and had a vibration and the car was pretty difficult," said Borkowski. "We just didn't have the balance sorted out today, but we'll be looking at our data and come up with a good solution. We know we have a strong car, and a great team working on it, so its just going to be a matter of doing our homework tonight and getting ready to qualify tomorrow."

The race, which is slated to run for 400 kilometers, or 89 laps of the 2.82-mile infield road/oval course, will start at 4 PM EST on Sunday, and will be broadcast live on Speed Channel.
