Fontana, California (April 3, 2005) -- The No. 10 SunTrust Racing team continued to show the racing world their desire to dominate the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series this year. After starting from the eleventh position on the grid, they systematically climbed up the charts to finish in second place, just a mere .096 seconds from the top spot. It was the closest finish in the history of Grand American racing. The SunTrust team's penultimate finishing spot earned them a 17-point lead over the No. 01 CompUSA/Ganassi team in the 2005 Grand American point standings, 102 to 85 points.
The polesitting No. 1 CompUSA Lexus Riley of Luis Diaz and Scott Pruett won the Maserati/Ferrari 400 at the California Speedway in a race that saw six car lead changes in 86 laps. In third place, behind the SunTrust Racing team, was the No. 6 Mears Motorcoach/Michael Shank Racing Pontiac Riley of Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears, Jr.
"It was a good result. Good for the points," said SunTrust Racing car owner/driver Wayne Taylor. "The racing is so, so close now. We're still going to have to do a lot of work for the rest of the season because it is no foregone conclusion that being up front for the first three races is going to really determine the end of the year, so we still have a lot of work to do."
The race included six cautions for a total of 19 laps and pit strategy played a huge part in the results. The SunTrust team pitted on the first caution, Lap 11, for a splash of fuel. The second caution came on Lap 22 with the SunTrust team in ninth position. They pitted for tires, fuel and a driver change to Max Angelelli, exiting the pits in the 15th position. Max "The Ax" Angelelli did what he does best, cut his way through the field to the finish. Excellent race strategy by team owner Bill Riley insured the podium finish for the No. 10 SunTrust Racing team. A few NASCAR-style fender-to-fender moves by Angelelli left the Pontiac Riley Mk.XI with worthy battle scars during his 65 laps.
"We had a very good car, but the level of the others made it quite tough," said Italian Max Angelelli. "I'm quite pleased with second place in thinking about the championship and the points. If we had one more lap, I probably could have overtaken Pruett."
