Chevy Goes 2-3 in DP; Wins GT and GS at Road America
Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney drove the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet/Riley Daytona Prototype to a second-place finish, and Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli guided the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Chevrolet/Dallara DP to a third-place finish in the GRAND-AM Rolex Road Racing Series Driven by Visit Florida at Road America on Saturday. Eric Curran and John Heinricy put their No. 31 Marsh Racing Corvette into victory lane in the GT class. The No. 88 Autohaus Motorsports Camaro GT.R carried the lead in GT into the final lap, but ran out of fuel, finishing fifth in class.
“I’m really happy for Ted Marsh Racing, and Eric Curran and John Heinricy; they did a great job right there to win,” said Jim Lutz, GRAND-AM program manager-GM Racing. “It’s the first win for Corvette in the GT class. The 88 car was just one lap short on fuel. Overall, a good day for Chevrolet: The 99 GAINSCO team finishing second in DP, and the win for Corvette in GT.”
“I was pretty happy with the car,” Fogarty said after GAINSCO/Bob Stallings’ second consecutive podium finish. “We had a good balance, all in all, and really just tried to maintain that balance by changing up what we were doing inside the car, and tried not to abuse it too much. But, we had a good run. Good race. I’m happy for the team. Obviously, we wanted one spot better.”
Taylor put SunTrust Racing on the pole, but lost the lead to Fogarty at the beginning of the race. The No. 10 team, though, later led 12 of the 46 laps.
“We had really a tough weekend,” Taylor said. “We had to change an engine on Wednesday, so we kind of lost a day, but considering all of the adversity I think the SunTrust guys did a really good job getting us back on the pace.”…I think we made the best of a tough weekend.”
The No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates DP team won Saturday’s race.
The No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Racing Chevrolet/Coyote DP finished 10th, two laps off the pace.
The No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R finished 12th in class. The No. 07 Banner Racing Camaro GT.R was involved in a serious wreck on lap five and finished 16th in class.
On Friday night, Camaro picked up its first-ever overall and in-class Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series win when Matt and John Edwards drove the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R to victory in the Road America 250. Additionally, the No. 6 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R, driven by Robert Stout and Jeff Bucknum, finished fourth after qualifying second.
“This was probably our best performance to date in this season,” said Jim Lutz, GRAND-AM program manager-GM Racing, after the race. “We’ve been getting better as the season’s gone on, and we’re becoming more competitive. I think this track just suited the Camaro the best, so far, this season. We’re getting better as the season’s gone on.”
The No. 9 Motorsports Camaro GS.R started 12th and led 27 of the 44 highly contested laps, but needed a late pass by Edwards before the final caution.
“I had a blast out there,” said Edwards. “It's so much fun racing in this series. We’ve had great battles, and tonight I got to race side-by-side, both on the outside and inside.”
Bell said the victory was team effort.
“Today, I think the set-up matched both of our driving styles pretty perfectly,” Bell said. “The team did just an outstanding job, rolling with the punches and trying to figure out what we needed to do, and whatever they needed to do, they did it, and it worked excellent.
“The team just hunkered down. They were all just kind of laughing this whole weekend, they were all very optimistic. They figured out a way to get this thing to just work. We were all working uphill and to come through like this is just unbelievable.”
Other Team Chevy teams: No. 01 CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R, 14th in class and overall; No. 62 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R, 16th/35th; and No. 00 CKS Autosport Camaro GS.R, 17th/40th.
The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series continues with the Continental Tire Sports Car Festival Powered by Mazda at Laguna Seca on July 8-9.
