Heading to Phoenix with many new combinations

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 18, 2000) -- While the list of contenders is firming up for the April 22 Sun Automotive 200 presented by azcentral.com and cars.com at Phoenix International Raceway, many questions remain to be answered at the second Grand American Road Racing Association event of the season.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona SportsRacer-class winning Dyson Racing will field a pair of Fords for the race, which is set to start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Dyson duo will face a number of new combinations, including Ferrari, Judd and Chevrolet-powered open-cockpit prototypes.

"The next two races will be very interesting because of the many untried combinations," explained Elliott Forbes-Robinson, who will drive a Ford-powered Riley & Scott Mk III fielded by Rob Dyson at Phoenix on April 22 and Miami May 7. "We've done a lot of work to our cars. Looking at the competition, Kevin Doran has a new Judd engine in his Ferrari, and George Robinson also will be going with a Judd engine in his Riley and Scott for the first time. Just about everyone will have an improved but untried combination for the races at Phoenix and Miami, and it should make for interesting competition."

Forbes-Robinson enters the Sun Automotive 200 at Phoenix tied for the SportsRacer points lead, by virtue of a class victory in the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona. Dyson Racing will field two cars at Homestead-Miami Speedway, with EFR paired with John Paul Jr. and Dyson in the No. 20, while James Weaver and Andy Wallace will co-drive No. 16.

The Phoenix event will mark the debut of the Grand-Am's newest class, SportsRacer Light. Three entries are set for the Phoenix event, a Nissan-powered Lola for veteran GT campaigners Larry Schumacher and Martin Snow, a Mazda-Kudzu for Dennis Spencer and Rich Grupp, and a Chevrolet-Magnum for Larry Oberto and Ryan Hampton.

Three GT classes will compete concurrently with the two SportsRacer classes. Ron Johnson and Terry Borcheller will pilot a Saleen Mustang entered by Steve Saleen and actor Tim Allen to head the GTO class. Their main competition will be the Porsche 911 Turbo of Canadians Greg Wilkins and David Lacey.

G&W Motorsports looks to improve on a strong third place finish in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, entering a pair of Porsche GT3Rs for Darren Law, Mike Fitzgerald and brothers Steve and Danny Marshall. Kevin Buckler and Philip Colin are entered the the Racer's Group Porsche GT3R, while veteran Bill Auberlen heads a two-car BMW M3 entry for Genesis Racing.

Rolex 24 class winner Doug Mills leads the American GT entry in the Comer Racing Camaro he shares with Andy McNeil. Doug Goad and Craig Conway return in the Daytona pole-winning Spirit of Daytona Camaro, while Bruce Nesbitt and Paul Jenkins share the wheel of a Roush Mustang.

The inaugural Sun Automotive 200 weekend also includes a three-hour Motorola Cup race on Saturday, and 30-minute NASPORT GT and American City Racing League races. Fan-friendly prices start at $10.

Friday tickets for the Sun Automotive 200 presented by azcentral.com and cars.com cost $10, including general admission, grandstand seating, parking and paddock. Saturday tickets are $20. Children 15 and under are free on Friday both days when accompanied by a paying adult. To order tickets, call (602) 252-2227 or visit www.phoenixintlracewaycom.
