DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 5 - Highcroft Racing's Duncan Dayton competed in North America's most prestigious sports car endurance race, the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, over the weekend at Daytona International Speedway. The North Salem, N.Y. driver was one of four for the Creighton Motorsports SUPPORTNET Riley & Scott MKIII Chevy #8, as he shared the wheel with Scott Schubot of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Henry Camferdam of Indianapolis and John Burton of England. The team recorded its best qualifying effort ever for the race on Thursday, earning the third starting spot in a field of 80 entries with an average speed of 125.37 mph. Hopes were high for a great race. Schubot took the green Saturday at 1 p.m. but the fireworks started almost immediately, as the second-place starter, a Ferrari 333 SP driven by Alex Caffi, spun in turn five. Caffi rejoined the field at the rear. That put Schubot in second place after the field crossed the start/finish line under green with one lap in the books. After a yellow flag for an accident on lap four, the green waved again on lap six. Schubot was only 1.5 seconds behind the leader, polesitter James Weaver in a Riley & Scott MKIII Ford. But on lap 10 a Porsche he was lapping got in the way and Schubot made contact with it. His car sustained front-end damage, including a broken A-arm. After repairs were made, Dayton got the opportunity to drive. The team was several laps down by now and effectively out of contention for the overall victory, however. "Oh well; the pressure is off," Dayton said philosophically. Unfortunately even salvaging a top-10 finish proved impossible, as Dayton was forced to pit on lap 59 with fluid pouring out of the engine. More repairs were made but the problem persisted, and another pit stop was necessary for the same problem on lap 75. The car officially retired from the race on lap 92 due to the engine problem, completing 45 laps for a 77th place finish. The race was broadcast live on ESPN2 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday. A show featuring highlights of the race will also air at a later date on ESPN. Dayton also entered three vintage cars in the HSR ThunderSports Enduro at Daytona: a '72 Chevron B-23, a '70 Chevron B-16 and the car he drove in the race, a '70 Lola T-70. He developed shifter problems with the Lola but persevered, only to run out of fuel at the end for a 14th place finish overall and second in the TS4 class.
