The Klout Racing Honda Civic Si debutted at the first round of the Motorola Cup in Daytona last weekend. The drivers were Jeff Kiel, Brian Quinette and Dwight Kelly. The crew included Richard Martin, Craig Goldsmith, Jason & April, and two SCCA buddies Jeff and Scott.

This Civic was purchased from Matt Whitiker who had built the car for the SCCA Runoffs last year. The car still had the SSC spec. shocks and springs. Even had the OEM rubber brake lines! Richard replaced the SSC cage with a proper Motorola Cup legal cage (STIFF!) and we stripped the interior. The only other modifications were those required to make the car legal (fire system, tow chains, decals).

We qualified 8th and finished 11th after an uneventful race. The crew did two awesome pit stops. Rob Ebersol and Andy Felker were nice enough to loan us a refueling rig. It was the old style with a regular pump handle. The 2000 M.C. rules allow a faster flowing dry break system. Seems some teams were using $1000 ported handles last year. Pit stops were around 2 minutes for a driver change, two front tires and refueling. Lots faster than SEDIV ECR stops! The driver can remain in the car and the motor can be running during refueling! I only saw two problems with other teams in the pits. The SGS corvette team pitted next to us appeared to spill oil on the headers causing a flash fire and an Integra Type-R team dropped the car off the jack breaking the oil cooler or lines.

Klout racing will be running all of the Motorola Cup races this year. I am building another car for the Sebring race. It looks like it will be an exciting series. The M.C. staff was very professional and the other drivers and crew were very friendly. The Commie Daytona guards are another story!
