B-K Motorsports Bids Farewell to Lola B0/46 Mazda at Detroit
Detroit -- Following its steady run in last Sunday's Grand Prix of Mosport, B-K Motorsports heads to the Motor City for this weekend's Detroit Sports Car Challenge presented by Bosch. The team's No. 8 BP Lola B07/46 Mazda will be making a fond farewell in Saturday's two-hour and 45-minute race, as it will be replaced by the brand-new Lola B08/86 Mazda Coupe in the following round at Road Atlanta.
But first, drivers Ben Devlin and Gerardo Bonilla will have to tackle Detroit's Belle Isle venue. The 2.096-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit was run for the first time in the Series last year. While it's the slowest track on the calendar, it also produces great multi-class action.
"Detroit in a way is going to be a little sad as it will be the last time with this car," Devlin said. "We've had some good times with it. We'll still learn a lot from this race, and we'll take things away to use for the future. The circuit is an interesting street course. Anything can happen again. It's important to keep the car off the walls. There are still great things to come for the rest of the season."
Devlin helped score a 6th place finish for the Lola Mazda at Detroit last season. This year, Devlin will be giving a helping hand to co-driver Bonilla, who will make his first start at the circuit. The former Skip Barber National champion and Star Mazda ace was met with similar situations earlier this year and handled it like a veteran.
"I've watched some video from previous years, and I think that will help acclimate myself to the track," Bonilla said. "I'm also going to get to the track early and do a lot of walking. That worked very well for St. Pete and Long Beach, which were both first time races for me as well. I'm really excited about this weekend, as I love learning new tracks."
"Detroit is a neat place to go to because the Mazda6 is built there in [nearby] Flat Rock," says John Doonan, Manager, Motorsports Team Development for Mazda North America. "We'll have a lot of Mazda and BP friends that will be there. Hopefully, we'll be able to put on a good show for them and we can have another effort like we had at Elkhart Lake. We want to end on a high note with our open-top Lola Mazda and then welcome in the new Lola Mazda Coupe for the Petit Le Mans."
