Montoya leads Daytona, three hours to go

With three hours remaining in the 46th Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, Juan Pablo Montoya, driving the No. 01 Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley and gunning for his second consecutive win, held a six-lap lead over the Bob Stallings Racing Pontiac Riley of reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmy Johnson, which lost several laps in the early morning hours when the car had to return to the garage so the team could replace the transmission.

Ganassi Racing could become the first team to win three straight Rolex 24 races - a feat which would also give Lexus its third consecutive win, Scott Pruett his third overall win, Riley its 44th Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype victory, and Ganassi its 16th win in the Daytona Prototype class.

The No. 76 Krohn Racing Ford Riley driven by Darren Turner lay third, seven laps behind Montoya, followed by the No. 9 Penske-Taylor Racing Pontiac Riley of Kurt Busch, who was eight laps off the pace, and Burt Frisselle in the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley, which was 10 laps adrift of Montoya after suffering a flat tire and resulting suspension damage caused by tire shreds wrapping themselves around the car's bell housing. The SunTrust Racing Pontiac Riley of Ricky Taylor sat in sixth, 12 laps down to Montoya.

Several cars that were on the lead lap as the sun rose on Sunday ran into problems in the early morning hours, as the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche Riley spun on the backstretch and hit the inside retaining wall after suffering a broken lower tie rod while in the lead and the Alex Job Racing Porsche Crawford limped to the pits with fluid pouring from underneath the car.

In the GT class, the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 led the way, three laps ahead of the No. 66 and 67 TRG Porsches. A win by the SpeedSource team would give Mazda its first production-based class win since 1993.
