Mosport race report

BOWMANVILLE, Ont., Canada -- Richard Spenard and Jean-Francois Dumoulin won their second consecutive Motorola Cup presented by NewTech Group International race Saturday. The duo completed 109 laps at Mosport International Raceway at an average speed of 97.836 miles per hour over the 2.459-mile circuit.

They had won the previous race at the Toronto Molson Indy last month and also took the Super Grand Sport class -- and overall -- victory at Mid-Ohio in June.

Spenard, of Beaconsfield, Que. and Dumoulin, of Trois-Rivieres, Que., drove their NewTech Porsche 911 Turbo to a 0.742-second victory over the Corvette CR5 of Montreal native Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald of Phoenix, Ariz.

"It was a great race," Spenard said. "the Motorola Cup is a great series. I've been away too long. It was great to be back at Mosport." Dumoulin agreed. "It was good race; lots of fun. It was great to be at Mosport again."

David Brown of Pahrump, N.Y. and John Kohler of Bradford, Pa., won the Grand Sport class in a 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra. It was Brown's third class win of the season and the second for Kohler. They finished sixth overall.

Howie Liebengood of Vienna, Va. and Andy Lally of Northport, N.Y. won the Sport Touring class in a 1997 BMW 328. It was third victory for both Liebengood and Lally this season. They were 11th overall. John Schmitt of Sunbury, Ohio and Bryan Johnson of Marysville, Ohio took the C2K class (13th overall) in a Honda Civic Si. Devon Powell of nearby Port Perry, Ont. and Doug Goad of Farmington Hills, Mich. started the race in the #30 SGS Sunoco/Powell Motorsports Corvette after Powell destroyed their #11 car in qualifying Saturday. Unfortunately, the car lasted only 17 laps before Craig Conway of Daytona Beach, Fla., who started the race, retired with engine failure. The other regular driver in the #30 car, Peter Tonelli of Northboro, Mass. switched to the Wind River Racing #40 Grand Sport Pontiac Firebird.
