ST. PETERSBURG, FLA (January 28, 2002) - Tom Dyer, the 2001 Formula Ford Zetec Championship "Rising Star" award winner, is set to take part in the 2002 Rolex 24 Hour at Daytona.
Dyer will contest his first endurance race drive on the demanding 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway road course with Team Bucknum Racing. The team will contest the Grand-Am SRPII class with a Pilbeam Prototype car.
The 24 hour race will once again feature drivers from NASCAR, CART and the Indy Racing League. Currently scheduled to race in the twice around the clock classic event are NASCAR Winston cup drivers Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, John Andretti, Kyle Petty and Robby Gordon, CART driver Max Papis, IRL competitors Scott Sharp, Steve Knapp, Anthony Lazzaro and current Formula 1 test driver Oliver Gavin. In addition, world-renowned endurance racers such as Didier Theys, James Weaver, Eric Van De Poole, and ex-Formula 1 pilots, Stefan Johansson, Alex Caffi, David Brabham and Jan Lammers are commited to race. Dyer is looking forward to the opportunity to compete against such an array of internationally recognized drivers.
"I am really looking forward to this," said Dyer. "I've never run an endurance race before so it's going to be an interesting new experience. I know it's going to be a blast driving an SRPII car on the famed Daytona track. It will be a bit of a departure from what I'm used to where you drive flat out for an entire race. Here to finish first, first you must finish. With that in mind my goal is to drive smart and have fun. I'd really like to thank the Team Bucknum racing team for helping me make this opportunity a reality."
