Phoenix, AZ - Phoenix International Raceway was the latest site for the Grand American Rolex Series. The two hour and forty five minute race was run on the tight confines of the 1.51 mile circuit. With nineteen Daytona Prototypes and over forty total cars on the track, traffic made for a large challenge for the drivers.
SpeedSource Race Engineering entered two Ford powered Multimatic Daytona Prototypes into the race. The #9 Mears Motor Coach sponsored entry was being driven by Paul Mears, Jr. and Mike Borkowski. The #70 Workscape sponsored entry was being driven by Selby Wellman and team owner Sylvain Tremblay.
"As the weekend progressed Selby Wellman and Paul Mears both progressed nicely with their adaptation to the tricky Phoenix course," commented Sylvain Tremblay. "Every session their times were faster and faster. The traffic out there was a nightmare but they both adapted nicely."
When the race started the two drivers both suffered bad luck. Both cars were taken out early from on-track incidents. The cars couldn't be fixed and the team finished 17th and 18th in class.
"The traffic on track was as bad as I have seen," commented Tremblay. "Both Paul and Selby got unlucky with other cars and that ended our day. We are heading to Mont Tremblant next in five weeks. We have already been to that track with the Daytona Prototypes so we believe that we will have better luck there."
In a very competitive Rolex Series the #70 sits twelfth and the #9 sits thirteenth in the Team Point Standings out of twenty two entries. Selby Wellman is the highest placed SpeedSource driver sitting in twenty fourth out of seventy seven drivers in the Driver Championship.
The Rolex Sports Car Series will return to action next month in the 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, Canada. For additional information visit www.speedsourceinc.com.
