A sudden downpour at Road America led race officials to cancel Friday’s qualifying session and set the field for Saturday’s GRAND-AM Rolex Series 250 driven by VISITFLORIDA.com by team points.
Memo Rojas will start on the Daytona Prototype pole in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley co-driven by Scott Pruett, and will be joined on the front row by the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP of Terry Borcheller and David Donohue.
Rojas and Pruett are defending winners of the two-hour race that takes the green flag at noon ET (SPEED, live).
“This is the easiest pole I ever got, but those are the rules,” Rojas said. “We were excited about our chances for qualifying, because we feel we have a pretty good car this week. It will be a tough race tomorrow, and we are looking forward to our first victory this season.”
This has been the closest battle to date for the Daytona Prototype championship. After six of 13 races, 11 drivers representing seven teams are separated by only nine points. Pruett and Rojas lead with 170 points. Tied for second – only two points back – are Enzo Potolicchio and Ryan Dalziel in the No. 8 Starworks Motorsport Ford/Riley, and David Donohue in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP. It’s one point back to Richard Westbrook – a two-time winner in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP – while Detroit winner Darren Law in the No. 9 Action Express Racing Corvette DP is another point back with 166.
Emil Assentato will start on the GT pole in the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari 458 Italia co-driven by Jeff Segal, with the No. 57 Stevenson Auto Group Chevrolet Camaro of John Edwards and Robin Liddell starting second. Defending winners Eric Curran and John Heinricy will start 15th in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette.
