Andy Wallace maintained a 24-lap lead after 19 hours of the 31st running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Running second overall and first in the GTS category was the No. 2 Corvette, with its team car, the No. 3 Corvette currently driven by NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt, running second in class and fourth overall.
Misfortune struck two of the class leaders when the GT-leading BMW M-3 of Toney Jennings, running third overall, pitted with an oil leak, handing the class lead to the White Lightning/Peterson Motorsports Porsche. Moments later, the SRPII-leading Archangel Motorsports Nissan Lola of Tony Dudek spun in turn one of the Superspeedway and was collected by the Spirit of Daytona Beach Camaro of Doug Goad, who was running second in the American GT category.
The Risi Competizione Ferrari 333SP was running a strong second throughout the event before retiring at 5 a.m. when overheating trouble led to engine failure. Also challenging for the lead was the second Dyson entry, which fell far back in the running after stopping two hours to have the input shaft to the transmission replaced.
Leading the American GT class was the Hamilton Safe Motorsports Camaro driven by Dick Greer.
