Ross Kaiser news 2011-01-18

Ross Kaiser shines at Autosport
Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge winner Ross Kaiser has had a whirlwind experience at this year's Autosport show.

'Things have changed so much for me since last year's show, in 2010 I was here working with the 360 Racing team but now I'm very much the focus on the Sunoco/Anglo American Oil Company stand. People have been asking for photos and autographs, it's all very strange for me!'

A press conference with Ross, Alana France (Director of International Development for GRAND-AM and the International Speedway Corporation), Anders Hildebrand (MD of Anglo American Oil Company), Richard Dean (MD of United Autosports) and via the phone Dave Spitzer (Head of Competition for GRAND-AM) kicked off the first day of the show. The room was full of media from all around the world who were eager to listen to Ross's story and how GRAND-AM is progressing with the Rolex 24 At Daytona®.

The second day of the show saw Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell (who will also be racing in the Rolex 24 with United Autosports) come to the Sunoco/Anglo American Oil Company stand and be interviewed alongside Ross, Richard Dean and the first Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge winner Derek Johnston. It was absolutely fantastic to get two of the UK's most famous faces in racing giving Ross tips for the Rolex 24.

Ross said: 'It was awesome to talk to Martin and Mark about their experiences from the Rolex 24 and oval racing. Talking to them was great and I got a lot of useful tips.'

Martin and Mark have both come out of retirement to race at the famous Daytona circuit. When asked if he had perhaps lost his touch Martin said: 'Racing is like riding a bike or swimming- you never forget how to do it. I'm technically a better driver than when I was a professional due to all my experience within F1 and from coaching my son.' (Martins son races in Formula 2)

A good tip from Mark Blundell was to 'drink' and by that he meant the proper stuff! 'The race can really take it out of you especially with the warmer temperatures in Florida, you have to drink water and plenty of it. Drink until you have had enough and when you have - drink some more! It's basic but make sure you keep it in mind.'

Ross then spend the next couple of days on the stand alongside Derek Johnson, the inaugural winner of the challenge, signing autographs and posing for pictures which was all a bit of a shock for the 28 year old!

'Winning this challenge has been fantastic, I can't get used to people wanting my autograph and photos but it's an experience I never want to end!'

Ross is now embarking on an intense fitness regime before heading out to Daytona for the big race, which takes place on the 29th and 30th of January. He will be focussing on the endurance aspect of the race -- in particular heat training. The DP car can get very hot in the race not only due to the design of the car itself but also due to the climate which is very different to that of the UK. Sauna training has become particularly important in Ross's regime, it is likely that each driver in the race will have two hour stints in the car and therefore getting used to the warm temperatures is a must.

Ross will be flying out to Daytona on Monday the 24th of January.
