Owen Trinkler Legacy Credit Union 200 Race Review

For drivers Owen Trinkler and Jade Buford, both of whom have spent many hours testing and racing at Barber Motorsports Park, this past race was one that was thought to be a venue the driver pairing would fare well in with their #196 RSR Motorsports Mini Cooper S. With stiff competition in the ST class of the 2009 Koni Challenge Series, this would not be an easy feat; especially with the current run by the APR Motorsports team that has been so dominant with their VW Golf GTi's having won the past two events.

The pairing started out strong in the test day with some of the fast times of the day while getting their set-ups dialed in. As the weekend continued on, the competition began catching up to them throughout the practices and qualifying sessions. The #196 Cruise America entry would qualify 16th and knew they had a fight on their hands to get to the front of the pack for the finish. Driver Jade Buford would handle the start of the race and pushed hard to turn over a good car to co-driver Owen Trinkler on the lead lap.

Trinkler quickly began making up ground on the pack and would have an excellent battle in the last 30-minutes of the event with a BMW before overtaking his competitor for good and settling into 4th position. The action during the race was very spread out, and Owen needed another yellow flag to close up to the top-3 in the field. A yellow that would never produce itself, and the #196 RSR Mini Cooper S of Trinkler and Buford would cross the line in a season-best 4th place. A much needed injection of positive results the team desperately needed to build on for the final three rounds of the 2009 series season.

An exuberant Trinkler post-race states; "What a great comeback for our team after huge disappointment at Mid-Ohio. We had an o.k. weekend where the car had some speed, but the pit-stops were awesome today and the crew did a great job all weekend." Owen continues "It was great to be back at the front of the pack and to do it at my home track was great with all my family and friends in attendance."
